I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions.  It has nothing to do with lack of will power or determination, it’s just that by the 3rd of January I completely forget what my resolution was.

I need simple. Really simple. That’s why I much prefer to choose a ‘word of the year’ instead.

When you set a ‘word of the year’ you don’t need to remember to do, or eliminate, any one specific activity. Your word becomes the essence of how you live your life for the year.

How to choose your business word of the year

Your word of the year will generally be aligned with your business’ core values.  It might be something like: excellence, growth or focus.

If you have not already taken the time to define the core values of your business, then complete this activity.

Set aside 10 minutes when you won’t be disturbed. Get a piece of paper and pen and write down all the words that best captures what your business stands for and what you want your business to be known for.

Don’t overthink your selection, just write down anything that feels important to you and your business. And don’t let others influence your choice.

Stuck for some values, here’s a few for some inspiration:

  • Accountability
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Creativity
  • Empowerment
  • Fun
  • Freedom
  • Innovation
  • Integrity
  • Pioneer
  • Nurturing
  • Mastery
  • Quality
  • Reliability
  • Vision
  • Wealth

Once you have defined your core values, select just ONE to be your word of the year.

An alternative to choosing your word of the year is to choose a quality that you do not yet possess in your business, but it is something you would like to develop, such as: productivity, effortlessness or persistence. Be careful that you are not focusing on what you ‘should’ do, this year long exercise is an opportunity for growth rather than trying to ‘fix’ something. Select a value that is attainable and that is truly what you want for you and your business. Again, just select only ONE word.

Just one word can provide clarity for the year ahead

Why only ONE word?

We live in such a fast paced, information overload world. If we give ourselves too many values to focus on we increase our chances of giving up on all of them. It is much better to narrow down and select only one value to give our fullest attention throughout the year, which then allows for greater personal growth and development.

What do you do with your word?

Firstly, write it down and put it somewhere prominent where you can be reminded of your word of the year daily.

The one word creates a vision and inspiration for the year. Use your word as a guide to steer your business to what you want it to become, let your word inspire you in the plans, choices and decisions you make for your business.

The word is your overarching theme for your business, for the entire year. What will be your business word of year?
