We’ve reached that time of year where we start thinking about setting our new business goals for the year ahead. But what is important, which is often overlooked is looking back over the year just past to celebrate the successes and release the challenges.

An end of year ceremony is a simple and powerful exercise you can do make space for your business intentions and dreams for next year by reflecting, rejoicing and releasing the outgoing year.

By consciously marking the end of something and the beginning of something new helps you to let go of what you don’t need and allows you to integrate your insights and lessons learned to move forward. You are allowing your future to be guided by the wisdom that comes from your own personal life experiences, the good and the bad.

Set aside some uninterrupted time and find a quite spot and to celebrate and release the year gone. Make the time sacred by eliminating all distractions, switch off the phone, shut down the computer.

Get comfortable, grab your journal or writing paper and your favourite pen to answer the end of year ceremony questions, you might like to play some soft music in the background or maybe silence is more your thing.

Now you’re going to reflect on both the wonderful and not so nice things that happened during the year. Give thanks to all your experiences. For those areas of challenge in your business, it is important to not dwell in regret or sorrow, but to reflect on the valuable lessons from your experience so you can move on and forward.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

  • What business dreams came true this year?
  • What were your business accomplishments over the past year? Big and small everything is important.
  • What are you most proud of?
  • What new business skills, insights and wisdom did you acquire?
  • In what ways did you courageously step outside of your comfort zone?
  • What were the biggest challenges in business for you this year?
  • What were your business weak points?
  • What can you do to improve or change so you’re not faced with the same challenges and weaknesses next year?
  • Looking back over the year, can you identify any major themes? (whether it was intentional or not)
  • What are you grateful for that happened this year gone, and why?
  • What did you learn about yourself this year?
  • What do you want to leave behind as the year ends?
  • What intention do you want to set for the New Year?
  • How will you celebrate and honour your business accomplishments this year?

Take a moment to relish in the fantastic parts of the year and release the unpleasant parts. You might also find it helpful have a burning ceremony let go of the unpleasant moments. Get your pieces of paper that lists all those not very nice parts of the year, set it alight, and watch it burn, taking away whatever no longer serves you. Now you don’t have to burn it, you can dispose of it any way want, flush it down the toilet, throw it into the ocean. That moment of burning or disposing is a symbolic way of saying “release this from me”.

An end of year ceremony is a powerful way to complete and acknowledge your year.
