What does it mean to live a rich life?
When people think about living richly what usually comes to mind is designer wardrobes, Maserati’s, mansions by the ocean and millions in the bank.
Does having an abundance of money and material possessions really equal living a rich life?
Firstly, we absolutely do need to make money in order to meet our basic needs. That is ensuring we have shelter, food and clothing. Savings accounts and retirement plans are also important and it is always nice to be able to treat ourselves a little.
Money and material possessions will help with peace of mind, but these things alone does not define living a rich life.
Living a rich life comes from your heart. It stems from the relationship you have with yourself, others and the world around you. All the things money can’t buy.
“If you want to feel rich, just count the things you have that money can’t buy.” – Proverb
What makes me feel the richest is the love and support from my family, the wellbeing of my children, the laughter and tears shared with my amazing friends who have stuck by me even during the most challenging of times and my dog’s excitement to see me when she hasn’t seen me all day.
I feel rich when in nature, when I’m surrounded by majestic and spectacular mountains, when I am by the ocean and I can hear the roar of the waves, smell the salt air and can feel the sand between my toes or when I am deep amongst the trees and all I can hear is the rustling of leaves and the sounds of birds singing to each other.
I even feel rich when I go to a supermarket and am confronted by aisles of choice, when I can turn on a tap and there is running water, by flushing toilets, clean air and clean and safe surroundings. Certainly travelling in developing countries has helped me really appreciate just how lucky I am to live where I do.
Being rich in business is not dissimilar to being rich in life.
There are many women who don’t choose to start a business for money, power or status. Rather they start a business for the richness it brings to their lives through the freedom and flexibility of working for themselves, the relationships they build with their clients and their team and the fulfilment of following their passion and exploring their creativity.
It is time to redefine being rich and think about all the things in your life that makes you feel rich that money can’t buy.
